I love jQuery tools but I recently had a problem with embedding a YouTube video in an overlay where upon closing the modal overlay the video would keep playing. I’ve used Fancybox before and it takes care of this automatically for you but not in this case. After looking around the web I found no solution so I created my own really quickly In short, I grab the html from the HTML element where the YouTube embed code is inserted and save that to a variable. Then on the overlay script itself I add an onClose function where I...
read moreYesterday I attended my first Mondo Mystery Movie event thanks to my friend Chris in LA who couldn’t come and needed someone to collect the posters given away with each ticket. It was quite an experience. We met at the Riverbend Church parking lot and then bussed us all the way to Highland Mall. Once we got to the mall, we soon saw it was riddles with zombies. We then ran out of the busses and as a military foces fought off the zombies coming after us. Definitely the coolest movie event I’ve ever been a part of. Once...
read moreYesterday my fellow co-workers and I at Enviromedia are commemorating the anniversary of Sept 11 by helping the PayItForward Foundation and doing random acts of kindness. I went out with a co-worker and pretended our car was broken down on the side of the road and waited for someone to help. Finally a woman stopped and we gave her a $100 for her act of kindness. Turns out she was on her way to donate clothes to the victims of the Bastrop fires and said she is going to give the money to help them. For more information about Pay It...
read moreGoogle today introduced a new tool from their labs that ”converts Flash SWF files to HTML5.” I thought I would give it a try on an old flash demo I did a while at InsiderPages. Below is the result I got from the tool: Looks like Swiffy doesn’t support shapetweens, fscommand, MovieClip.getDepth(), setInterval, MovieClip.createEmptyMovieClip(). Wonder what else it doesn’t support since my animation was a very basic animated demo. The website says that “Swiffy currently supports a subset of SWF 8 and...

read moreJust a quick warning, this site is currently under a redesign. Over the weekend I had some fun with JQuery and created a new portfolio section. Pretty happy with the design and layout just need to fix the links to the individual portfolio piece pages. So just a warning, the site is still under construction. Going to tackle the homepage and comics pages layouts next.
read moreIt’s a no brainer. To become a better web designer you must understand your medium and the tools people use to create content for it. Unfortunately in today’s post-Flash web those tools are becoming increasingly more difficult for designers to embrace. No longer can designers fall back on Flash’s pretty GUI to fly objects around the screen and create awesome two minute site intros. If you want to be today’s next gen designer then you will need to learn to program with Javascript. There’s just no way...
