Wonder of Comics: Zuda Feb. ‘09 Contest Begins

By GusHiguera • Feb 2nd, 2009 • Category: Wonder of Comics, ZudaFan

It truly is a wonderful thing to wake up in the morning on what seems to be an ordinary day only to find a brand new set of webcomics are waiting for you when you turn your computer on. Zuda.com has already been publishing comics online for more than a year now but I still get excited every month when a new contest begins. This month we have another set of great comics to enjoy as we watch the creators battle it out for the top spot. Here is the list:

Azz’s Inferno

Doctor Immortalis

Fire and Water

Gravedust

Indie

Ninjas from Ibiza: Clubbin’ to Death

Operation: Nazi U

Part-Time Magic

Splitting Atoms

The Hammer

What I found most interesting about this months competition were the names of the comics. Some of the names that hit me instantly when I first saw the Zuda homepage were Ninjas from Ibiza, Indie, The Hammer and Gravedust. All great catchy names in another great collection of diverse talents from all over the globe.

Zuda Competitors’ Blogs Roundup

There’s already been some activity on the Zuda forum by some of the creators who have posted links to their blogs. The Hammer team has a blog with some great behind-the-scenes stuff as well as some drawings of their creators in bunny suits. Stop by and say hi to their peeps.

Last month’s contest was won by an Italian creator and this month also brings us another great comic from another Italian creator named Francesco Biagini who has a blog up for his comic Ninjas in Ibiza up at http://biaginifrancesco.blogspot.com/2009/01/ninjas-from-ibiza-da-gallery.html. You really have to check out the posters of Francesco’s wild character designs that incorporate symbols from occult Freemasonry. I instantly noticed the Masonic references and when I mentioned them to him on the boards he responded by saying “nothing’s better to create the sense of ancient mystery”. I would keep an eye on this comic. We could have an Italian repeat this month.

Zuda News Roundup

Dean Haspiel, creator of Street Code, was featured in an article in the New York Times entitled “Beyond Peanuts.” Pretty cool to see a Zuda creator make it in the mainstream media.

David Gallaher posted an article in the Newsarama blog called “Hey Kids! Free Comics!” in which he highlights some of his favorite webcomics.

The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund has a great Popeye sketch up on Ebay by the Night Owls’ Bobby Timony. Check it out here.

Zuda at NYCC

Zuda will be at the NYCC this week at booth 1641. They will also be at a panel on Friday, 3:30-4:30, Room 1A06. If you’re gonna be in the area, stop by and say hi.

Well, that’s all the Zuda goodness I have for you today but I’ll be at NYCC later this week to bring you all the exciting news coming from the con.
